The one that breaks the camel's back

There is a sign in every HDB lift that states the maximum load that it can hold. 540 kg, it says on most of those signs. The HDB engineers also explicitly decided that 8 people would fit that weight bill just right. That puts the average weight of each person at 67.5 kg.

Now, my friend Library Boy is 80 kg. In the worst-case scenario, 8 Library Boys in the lift would destroy it with an excess of 100 kg. Alternatively, assuming that I am 55 kg, 4 Library Boys and 4 of me would match the stated load perfectly. And the lift will rise up to the fifth floor where a little black shih tzu trots in, and with his mighty 10 kg, sends us all to our deaths.

Well, I think the lift can hold more than 540kg worth of accumulated weight. They have to factor in some excess weight allowance here and there because of the safety consideration. The 540kg is probably there as a recommended weight allowance so that sweaty lift users will not tempt Fate and cause everyone to plunge to their deaths and become smithereens.

Well, there's always the alarm for overloading. Rest assured, it won't crash so easily... :P
